Utility Trenchless Installation & Horizontal Directional Drilling in the Niagara Region

At Sid Grabell Contracting, we offer professional directional drilling services for utility infrastructure throughout the Niagara Region, including Fort Erie, Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara Falls, Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake, Pelham, Port Colborne, St. Catharines, Thorold, Wainfleet, Welland, and West Lincoln, Ontario. Our trenchless drilling solutions provide a cost‑effective and minimally disruptive alternative to open trenching for underground conduit, cable, and pipe installations.

Directional drilling — often called horizontal directional drilling (HDD) — allows us to install underground utilities beneath roads, sidewalks, waterways, and sensitive landscapes without disturbing the surface, saving you time and money on restoration and project timelines.

What Is Directional Drilling?

Directional drilling is an advanced, trenchless method used to install underground pipes, conduits, and cables along a controlled, curved path. Unlike traditional open‑cut trenching, HDD drills a pilot hole along a pre‑planned route, then reams (widens) the hole to the required diameter before pulling the conduit or pipe into place, all while minimizing surface disruption.

This process makes directional drilling ideal for installations under:

  • Roads and highways

  • Sidewalks and driveways

  • Rail lines

  • Waterways and sensitive environmental areas

  • Landscaped or developed property

Directional drilling greatly reduces restoration costs, limits disruption to traffic and daily operations, and protects existing surfaces and vegetation.

Our Drilling Fleet – Powerful, Reliable & Precise

We operate two advanced Vermeer horizontal directional drills that provide the versatility and performance needed for a wide range of utility installations:

Directional drill

Vermeer D20x22

Ideal for residential and light commercial directional drilling, this rig offers:

  • High maneuverability for tighter job sites

  • Efficient pilot hole control and pullback force

  • Excellent for shorter bores and standard conduit sizes

Directional drill

Vermeer D24x40

Designed for larger infrastructure installations, this rig offers:

  • Higher thrust and pullback capacity

  • Greater power to handle longer bores and challenging subsurface conditions

  • Efficient performance in rock, clay, and dense soil environments

What We Install

Power Conduit

Underground installation of low‑ and medium‑voltage conduits for electrical distribution, helping preserve roadways and infrastructure during power line expansion or replacements.

Communications & Fiber

Directional drilling is especially suited for installing fiber optic, communications, and broadband conduit with minimal surface impact — ideal for telecom, data network, and broadband infrastructure installs.

Water & Other Utilities

We also install conduits for water services, stormwater systems, and other utility conduits where trenchless solutions are preferred or required.

Benefits of Our HDD Services

Directional drilling offers many advantages over traditional open trenching:

  • Minimized surface disruption: Roads, landscaping, and hardscapes are left intact.

  • Lower restoration costs: No need for repaving, reseeding, or replacing hard surfaces.

  • Faster project timelines: Reduced excavation and cleanup time keeps your project on schedule.

  • Enhanced precision: Entire bore can be navigated under obstacles with controlled depth and alignment.

  • Environmental protection: Less soil disturbance helps preserve existing terrain and waterways.

Whether you are installing new utilities or upgrading existing infrastructure, our directional drilling services deliver reliable performance with minimal impact.

Our Directional Drilling Process

We approach every project with careful planning and execution:

  1. Site Assessment & Utility Locates – We map existing subsurface utilities and hazards before drilling.

  2. Pilot Hole Drilling – A guided drill head bores the initial pathway.

  3. Reaming & Hole Enlargement – The borehole is widened to the necessary size for conduit or pipe.

  4. Conduit Pullback – Utilities are pulled through the bore path with precision.

  5. Final Connections & Inspection – Seamless connection and final system checks.
